People always say this to me and the answer is so simple. They refuse to throw big enough baits all the time in the places where the bass are. That is why. I am going to discuss this more this year in the videos. No.... This is not TOURNAMENT FISHING!

If you want to win tournaments, learn to be a pro, etc this is not for you. It is another topic, but if you are like me, just looking for giant bass all the time, then you need to read and understand this. My brother and I were first turned on to this by Bill when we were with him at Table Rock Lake fishing in the Big Bass World Championship back in 1998, 99, and 2001. We were running a guide service and fishing tournaments then so it was not something we could do on a regular basis here in the East and make a living, but on a personal basis for you guys, and now for me since I don't have to depend on the guide service or tournaments anymore for a living, this is what I do 80% of the time, and if you really want giant bass wherever you are you better pay attention to this.

I am not telling you that you will not catch big bass throwing jigs, because you will!! I am not telling you that you will not catch BIG bass throwing many other baits, because you will!! But they are not the BIGGEST bass in the lake! They are just big, I mean 6, 7, 8 pound bass. That is big! But it is not the biggest bass that are in the lakes and rivers here by any means, There are bigger bass that are 9, 10, and yes, even 11 pounds right here in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, Pennsylavania, and New Jersey and New York. You need to understand the concept of fishing shade lines, moving the Strike Zone, and profiles of baits if you really want big bass, not just numbers.

Read this article and you will start to understand what I am saying.

Interesting article. I really liked the part about "back up and look at a 4 inch tube next to a big swimbait, and the tube is basically gone, while the swimbait doesnt look so big anymore" This makes sense, I am going to have to try some bigger swimbaits this year in Kansas. Good post.

I dont think that people realize that when they tie on a bait that is 8" long that they are automatically disqualifiying over 50% of the fish in that lake as potential catches. You are simply going to get fewer bites. You will however have greater
"drawing" potential. You will get the attention & hopefully the ire,  of greater numbers of the larger predators..........Your offering must be natural & be perfectly vulnerable.  It takes a different mindset to simply pursue donkeys no doubt.

These giant bass take a ton of dedication. We fish a whole year in the areas that these fish live and are happy with just a few encounters per season with these 9 pound plus bass. There simply aren't alot of bass here this size but if youre dedicated you can catch the few that are there by using giant baits

interesting .what would the perfect conditions be for throwing an 8" bait?and what stage of the season would you have the best chance in cathing a big girl?i would rather toss abig bait 100 times to catch a giant. then 10 tosses with a 3" bait for 2-3 lbers.dont get me wrong thats what i catch, 2-3 lbers 95 precent of the time.but  thats what i toss 95 precent of the time.

Yes there are I used to think that before I understood that they are there you just do not catch them. I catch bass every year now that are within the 80-95% of the STATE RECORD weight here. Hell the state records in Massachusettes and Connecticut are way bigger than Delaware or Maryland! And it is freezing there!!  I catch at least 40 bass a year that are within a pound of the state record and another 50 bass that are within 2 pounds of the state record, and at least 100 bass that are from 5-7 lbs in addition. Not all on big swimbaits, but on big bass baits and tactics. 50 %  of the REALLY big bass come on swimbaits, the others come on big jigs, frogs, and buzzbaits/topwater.

If you concentrate on just big bass and throw the swimbaits and jigs properly, you will start catching them. I don't just catch big bass in a private lake, I catch at least 70% from public waters.

Throw the swimbaits and jigs in March and April and you will catch a bass that is bigger than any others you have caught.

Don, I'm in RI and fish MA as well.  I've been throwing swimbaits for 8 years now and have caught everything from 1lbers to 6lbers on 4-7inch swimbiats on a regular basis. MS Slammers, Hudds, Rago's Matt Lures etc..  Heck, John N and I have had 30 fish days one after another on just on 7 inch slammers.:D BTW........the fish in my profile pic is 8lbs, I have another at 8.2lbs and one at 7.4lbs but lost count of how many 5-6lb fish I've caught over the years in the North east, not to mention the numerous hawgs in the 6-8lb range that I've lost and then cried for  30 minutes straight.   I've also seen on numerous occasions HAWGS cruising the shallows in the 10lb range.  So the "BIG FISH" are here, but you have to put your time in on the water for it to pay off.
