Practice and also look here in the video section. I will also be doing several new jig videos in just a matter of weeks. Click here<<

After reading here also make a post in the ASK THE PRO STAFF section to Tom Wolverton who is also very good with jigs.

This worked for me. Find a pond or small water you can fish even from the bank. The only thing you take is a couple jigs and some trailers. Give it a half hour to an hour all you throw and pitch is the jigs. You will learn how to pitch the bait very quitelyy, what things on the bottom feel thing(rock, sand, wood) and hopefully when to set the hook.

I know when I launch the boat I want to catch fish.  It is very hard just to throw a jig if you have all your tackle. This why I say find a little pond or stream. Keep practicing and you will gain the know how about what your jig is telling you and how to put more fish in the boat.

This is a pretty open fourm so if you have any questions ask them there is a lot of good fisherman willing to share info

PATIENCE would be the best tip I can offer.   There are those days when a jig can be very productive landing fish after fish, but that's not always the case.  I'll flip drag hop and  swim a jig for 8 hours straight only landing 6 to 8 fish all day, but  those 6-8 fish are generally larger in size.   This is my own philosophy.....  I'd rather catch 5-10 Three to Five pound bass than 20 to 30 One to Two and a half pound bass on most occassions.  There are those times when the bite is slow and times I'll toss a jig out and let it sit for without moving for 30 seconds, then drag or hop it 6 inches and let it sit again for anothr 30 seconds, then repeat for only 5 to 6 feet, reel it in and flip it back out.  I don't try to cover a huge area wih jig, maybe moving 10 feet max, then reel it in and toss it back out. This isn't always the case though, other days you'll get SMACKED as soon as it makes contact with the bottom or on the first attempt to move it after the intial drop.  It all depends on what the fish are doing/want on that day.  I'm also one of those guys that will occasionally live and die by the jig because other than maybe a top water plug or swimbait it's probably my favorite lure to use.  Delaware and called3rdstrike give great advice as well, watch the vids ask the pro's and as c3s said, go out on a lake/pond you know is filled with bass and force yourself to take only jigs.   Patience, pratice time on the water= success!  Once you start catchin-em on a jig you won't want to put it down.  Best of luck to you!

I couldnt agree more some of my friends make fun of me for doing this but on my post in Fort Hood their are Ponds and small inpoundments full of bass all over the place and this is where i practice alot of presentation and technic to take on the big water. pluse i have young boys and they kill bass in this lil places keeping them entertained and intrested in fishing. i do the same on this ponds though i cant take all my stuff or ill get the jitters and want to change up to something that i know would be more productive nothing like a nice quite spot in the middle of nowheres to practice. and by the way they stop making fun of me after they seen the pic i use in my profile of a 24X23 inch bass practicing hitting the weed line with just the bill of a crank. good luck and practice makes perfect

My only tip is practice and practice practice I watched videos of kevin vandam, skeet reese,Mike iaconelli and all of the other pros then I left all of the rest of my baits at home and just took out the jig and trailers and mixed a little bit of everything in my presentation and now I catch fish on the jigs everywhere I go it has quickly became my confidence bait.

It is so involved. To make it short I use the Pitching and flipping and swim jigs. I have no favorite anything. I adjust to conditions and just use what works.

Most of the guys here have hit the nail on the head. Being a good jig fisherman (like any other technique) requires confidence. Keep your colors and sizes simple at first and gain confidence by going to small waters with lots of fish in them.

On a more technical level I do alot of jig fishing with braid and a flouro leader. This allows you to see your line and literally see bites on the fall. This of course applies mostly to pitching and flipping jigs. As far as bites go...when in doubt set the hook! A bite can feel like a freight train or a mushy sensation and everything in between.
