I have a 50lb thrust minn kota and a deep cycle battery and it moves my 10' jon boat along very good.  My boat is alot lighter though than the 12ft v hull.

Yep I have a 30 lb thrust as a reserve if my motor breaks and it is not sufficient at all!! It will barely move it for a few hours before the battery will go dead and the wind will not let you even move if it is above 10 mph.

Get the Minn Kota charger, the cheaper one will suffice and work just fine, just takes a little longer to charge. Getting the 55lb thrust is worth every penny as once you load up the boat with all your gear you want the extra juice to get you across the lake without it taking forever.

Now you realize that i am making these choices based on the fact that we are talking about a transom mount motor. If I were talking about a bow mount motor they would be different. For example, I would say that you need at least a 42 inch shaft or better as it would quickly come out of the water and churn on the surface in any kind of waves in a shorter length, and I would want one with at least 12 volts 55 lbs thrust minimum, to power a boat that was more than 12 feet and loaded. i think a 24 volt of at least 70 lbs is necessary for a bow mount motor  to power anything 14 feet or better.
