I throw my own hand poured small swimbait with a lot of luck. Its a 3.25 inch skinny dipper jr style bait. Am looking to learn more about smallies though, so i better pay close attention to this topic... | |

I use Gitzit tubes here in Delaware on the Brandywine river and they work really well. I will change colors depending on conditions. The water flows pretty strong generally so i will just let the bait flow with the current then lift lightly feeling for any weight. When i feel weight i set the hook. Its usually a fish or a rock...ha

Swim baits. Just reel it in slow and you nail them left and right. At least that works for me

I've never caught a smallmouth. Are they easier to catch or something, because lots of people seem to like them better than largemouths.

I catch a small mouth every once and a while. Usually when there under 2 pounds. The biggest one I ever caught was 18" and it was my first fish!

Spring and fall I like the jerkbait and the Smallies do too. Any other time Gulp drop shotting or a tube does the trick. They hit just about anything but those are my choices. On the Ohio river and Lake Erie that is.

I also see small mouth hitting different then large. We should definitely talk about which color is best for large or small mouth. I find light colors are better for small and darker for the large. Not sure how everyone is. It would be good to talk about it tomorrow night!

smallies are my favorite fish to catch they are so aggressive and put up a great fight!! i like to use tube, spinnerbaits and drop shots....

My best smallie was 6.2lbs. My favourite baits are the spinnerbaits, craw crankbaits, senkos and topwater baits such as poppers (for smallmouth). However, I am just getting used to the dropshot on my Voltaeus rod and will be looking to upgrade sometime next year, if I can come up with the extra money! I also like to fish the tube, but just like the drop shot, I am getting used to it and still getting a feel for what it has to offer. But I do have a nice setup that I use when fishing tubes! LOL

I like fishing smallies on tubes.... i seem to catch them the most anytime of the year on a watermellon color tube i use several different brands. Other bait i like is the spinner bait in the winter and early fall... terminator 1/2 chartruce with a red trailer hook is a must. youll catch about 90% of the browns on that trailer because they only swipe at it. makes for good reaction strike when the fish are really hesitant.

not to argue but i disagree on them just swiping at the blade(spinnerbait) whenever i get hit majority of the time they hammer it especially in a river system) .. they actually hit is so hard they knock slack in the line!!! i will agree they are hooked on the trailer but i belive thats bc its more exposed.. (they are more aggressive in a river system simply bc of the current they only have that split second to snatch that bait up or its gone as is to a lake they have a little more time to eat before they miss that chance.. for instance on the hudson river there is about an 8 ft tide swing so that water is moving causing them to be more aggessive and have less time to eat the bait .....correct me if im wrong that is just my theory on smallies for my experiences

i have to agree with you vinny i fish them in rivers and iv never used a trailer hook.and most of the time like you said they hit hard and fast the line will go limp or pull of to the side hard
