The mid 90's Merc's had a lot of problems with faulty kill switches. If all 3 cylinders went at the same time it could be an easy/cheap fix. A simple volt meter can tell if the switch is completing the circuit, or you could simply by-pass the switch all together (for testing purposes only obviously)

Did you disconnect the wires from the switch and connect them together or just disconnect them from the switch? Was the motor still turning over fine when it lost spark?

Disconnect the wires at the switch and connect them together to complete the circuit. that should trick the motor into thinking the kill switch is hooked up and in the run position. If that doesn't work then maybe one of the mechanics here would be close enough to take a look at it for you

If there is a plug on engine that runs to the helm unplug it.Next jump across the solenoid or starter to spin the engine and check for spark.
