So the state of Assachusets says i cant use any lead products that are less then an ounce to catch bass....

Assachusetts says.. Lead Sinkers & Jigs are killing Loons....

January 1, 2012 -- The use of any lead fishing sinkers and lead jigs weighing less than 1 ounce is now prohibited in all inland waters (fresh water) of the Commonwealth. In terms of this regulation, "lead sinker" or "lead weight" is defined as any sinker or weight made from lead that weighs less than 1 ounce. A "lead jig" is defined as any lead-weighted hook weighing less than 1 ounce. Prohibited tackle includes lead sinkers and jigs (weighing less than an ounce) painted, coated with some other substance or with attached "skirts".

Other types of heavier sinkers, fishing lures, and/or fishing tackle including, artificial lures, hooks, weighted flies, lead-core, buzz-baits, spinner baits, or other weighted fishing lines may still be used for freshwater fishing.

Ecologically safe alternatives to lead sinkers and lead jigs (such as steel and tin) are readily available from many sources and come in a wide variety of styles, shapes, weights, and sizes to meet every type of fishing need.

If you know me you know im a law abiding citizen........When im in a real deep sleep .............................So to the loons and the state of Massachusetts i say... O.k I promise...

Tell them you need a raise too, so you can afford the alternative's!!  Those loon's aren't the main thing that can be hurt!!  It would be the fish if anything.  How many loon's have you caught on a swim jig???  lol

You know, we've been fighting the lead ban in MN, too. There have been tons of studies done up here and they still can't prove that a lead ban will save loons. They're saying that loons are eating the lead and they've been checking dead loons and none of them have lead in them. The whole thing is a big farce. Last year I started using tungsten but it wasn't because of this. It's the fact that they are half the size of lead and don't get hung up in the weeds as easily. But it sure hurts the pocket book when a pike busts them off.

I know tungsten also have a better feel of the bottom. Not so much the money . You have to understand .' I've build my confidence with jigs on Dirty jigs. it's hard for me to stop fishing a jig i have so much confidence in.

I would never stop using it even if it was banned here which it wont be, except a tournament, I would not use it then, but I would go right back after and pay any fine I got,if I ever did with 2 Game Wardens in the entire county and hunting season and saltwater near by?? LOL I have only talked to 2 Game Wardens in 15 years. I would switch if they made what I needed in tungsten, but not all at once. lol and they dont!

Its true that lead kills birds...its called bird shot and every duck season lots of birds get killed...lol. The law is a crock of $#!^ .    Unbelievable, only in crazy New England.

Id say improperly discarded fishing line and soft plastic baits are a bigger threat to wildlife...are they going to ban that next?

I know what you mean... I was ice fishing and this ranger came by. He sat in his car for a good 20 mins. and then drove away. guess where he went? AROUND THE POND. he went around only to find that the ice was melted. then he yelled for us to go meet him on the other side. I stayed on the ice and my buddy went to the car, when the ranger came, he was scared sh*tless to fall through the ice. He kept asking what we were using and we kept telling him.than i pulled out my rod with a jighead and he was like.. "IS THAT LEAD?" than told us about the regulations. he was so concerned but he had no clue of what he was doing. he kept asking, and we kept saying that it was Tungstun. worst ranger I've met. Usually rangers are cool and share storys but this one....uhg.
