So I just bought my first red eye shad in the Sexy Shad color and went fishing tonight. I hooked 3 bass, but only landed one, couldve been a bad hook set, or just the standard hooks on the lure itself. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what treble hooks to buy. Also what would be some other colors of the red eye shad that work great in muddy, clear, and stained water.

i use gamas on all my hard baits , and make sure you have a real soft "crankbait" rod or at least a wimpy action rod to asorb the fight n jumps ect.. remember thats a 1/2oz bait the weight alone can pull the hooks out this is why its important to use the right rod! this is why i see alot of people lose fish #1 not the right equipment # 2 poor hooksets !!!! so i would change the hooks ! and red is the #1 color for me in stained water and clear water too!! and i would get a couple in gold and chrome!!!!

I like to use the same type of rod as tom suggested and I now use SUNLINE REACTION fluro on all those type of baits unless I am ripping it in grass then I use briad, but the SUNLINE really works well, but the rod and the technique is the most important, as well as the hooks. The hooks that come with that bait are fairly good hooks though, but I also use Gamakatsu on all the baits when I switch them.

Last year I switched out all my trap hooks with the KVD hooks. They are pricey but are great hooks. Threw a trap all day in the ABA of PA&NJ tournament last April on the Potomac and did not have one fish come unbuttoned. I am sold on these hooks for traps.

Thats part of the trouble right there. the action of the rod and the line. They are more important than anything else, then the hooks.

The other thing is the reel. We like to use a high speed reel for most applications and that also translates into more fish landed. A reel at at a minimum of 6:3:1 is required as well. I only use a baitcast reel for this application and almost all applications. REELS

I havent tried using a bait caster, but ive heard that its much harder for a beginner, so I'd rather use a spinning reel, but can only find them up to 6:2:1..I'm also on a tight budget as im saving up for a car, so if anyone would be able to recommend a specific rod and reel, that would be amazing. Im going to read up on them as well Delawarebass, its just that I work a lot and im going fishing tomorrow so maybe i can swing by a store if I know what to get.

I just started using a baitcaster this season and I'll never look back! I have a nice Shimano - Mojo bass spinning setup that I use for some finesse fishing but my go to setup will forever be a baitcaster now. Get yourself a quality reel and you will be fine.

You will not be able to get a spinning reel faster than 6:2:1 in most cases.
