Depends, straight shanks are a more slim profile, as in fit into a tighter spot without the hook bouncing off limbs, but in heavy cover go with a real flipping hook and barb.

I prefer a EWG, because it is easier to keep the hook in the plastic for less snags. for me at least.

I use EGW for everything for but skinny worms. I will use strait shank for that.

He is talking about the article Ish Monroe wrote about hook ups with plastics using a straight hook and line of pull and how it works etc and there are certain baits and times where you may get more hook ups with a straight shank hook, and with fipping hooks that are straight shank, it is the same idea, but straight shank hooks are paramount if you are PUNCHING HEAVY MATS like in the Potomac.

Straight shank hooks for vegetation flipping for me. Flipping brush and laydowns, either one works for me.

yea..i dont punch any mats..but i do fish pitch into alot of lilly pads...and i used gama superline ewg all season, and i did lose so fish that way..but im wanna start snelling knoting my hooks when im pitching plastics..people seem to get a better hook up ratio with that knowe..so i need a hook that will be good for snell knoting

I Really like straight shank hooks for heavy brush too. We have some really heavy brush piles in some of the lakes and ponds that I fish around here and I seem to get my bait quite a bit deeper into the cover with a straight shank hook. It's pretty much like punching for me except it is generally deep cover. I really like the Kumho reaper keeper and also the Paycheck baits punch hook. I haven't tried the new heavy cover Gamakatsus, but I'm sure they are a great straight shank too!

My answer would be straight shank. I punch with the gamakatsu heavy cover hook. Strong hook . Ive pull some nice bass out of the heavies with these hooks . I would recomend these hooks to anyone. I 've never had a bass shake loose on them or ever have a tip roll.

on my punch rigs i like to yous the smalli beaver so i cant get a flipping hook/strate shankwith barb in that compact bait so i have to yous a 1/0 ewg. but if they made a good 1/0 flippin hook i will be game for that

I used to use EWG for pretty much everything. But, I noticed I would loose more fish when I was flipping than any other method. It cost me some money once and I said, "no more" since then, I use straight shank hooks for flipping. True, they don't hold your bait as good, but, they do hold the fish better! If you get the ones with the heat shrink as a bait holder, they hold the bait fairly well. I have been using the paycheck hooks for flipping. They are stout! http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Paycheck_Baits_Punch_Hooks_5pk/descpage-PBPH.html?from=detroph

I just rec'vd 2 punching skirts from S.W.A.G. from a contest I won. I never had a bait without a hook attached that had a skirt, such as a spinnerbait or jig. I fish pretty much Lake Erie and there's really no punching involed here in the Buffalo area. Can I put a hook through this hole where the line goes through?

ok you need some tungsten flipping weights ,weight/punch stops and no the line goes through the hole and then rig it to your soft plastic bait wen you rig it it will be in this order -punch stop, weight, punch skirt, and texasriged soft plastic/hook with the line through all.
