Beat me to it tom, thats not a carp, its a shad, shad have very slimy micro scales, carp are big, much more stream lined, have barbells, soft mouths + body and large golden scales.

I used to catch shad like that on the Potomac.  They would swipe at rattletraps!

Lol huge? If you ever come to delaware, heres our average in addition to catching 2-3 at a time, i love this state. 100 in two hours isnt uncommon with the right tide.

When those Shad that big get into lakes they ruin it. Threadfin Shad are what you want, not these. They are too big for bass to eat after the first year, after that they do more harm than good in lakes. Those big Shad there are JUNK FISH! Good for nothing. They aren't even good to eat. People eat the American Shad and Hickory Shad, but the American Shad is the only one I would touch, those Shad we catch in the lakes and rivers etc are BS!! lol Good for nothing!

Carp have forked tails also but not the the degree of shad, and shad tails are stiff, carp are very soft thin flesh.

You guys need to learn all the baitfish in your area and be able to identify them right away. Shad ,well there are a lot that look alike when they are small, but the difference between Shad, Creek Chubs, Suckers, Carp, Catfish, all things you should be able to identify immediately. Get at it.

Just blows my mind that you guys are still fishing and I'm looking at a foot of ice on the lakes. Glad someone can get out and do some fishing !
